Welcome to ShipUtilities Distance v1.3F - Help

This easy to use program is provided to give quick and straight forward access to 3 different
information resources commonly used by people in the industry frequently. In fact this program
is also excellent for sailors and mariners in general since the ports listed provides geographical
coordinates and useful links to detailed information even on minor ports and in some instances marinas.

The following 3 resources are covered:
A distance table with over 80.000 direct distances and over 300.000
distances via junction points.
Comprehensive list of ports covering more than 6000 world wide ! !
Details of more than 500 Tanker terminals world wide.
Each of these are simple enough but usually NOT at your fingertips when you need them. So we bundled
them together in a simple, quick loading, resource lenient, application for your benefit.
In a zip format the whole program including the database will fit on a regular 3.5" diskette.

Installation
We deliver the program as a self-installing package containing all the files needed to run the program. Just follow the instruction and place SUDist v1.3F in a directory/folder of your choice. Default is C:\Windows\Program Files\sudist. The installer will place a shortcut to the program in your start menu. The directory will contain the following main files/directories: sudist.exe, sudist.ini and the directory db. db will contain 3 files named; distdb.db, portdb.db and termdb.db. The full complete version will be available for those who have registered, ordered and paid for the program and they will be directed to a download directory on our server for which we will supply an ID and password. The full verion has no limitations except for copy protection. The database is always encrypted. Installation Demo version
The demo version is also delivered as a selfinstalling package but the *.exe file has a different name. The demo version will run for as long as you like but holds only a small selection of distances, ports and terminals. The demo version database is encrypted and so is the *.exe file itself. More than 99% of the distances are empty and only ports starting with the letters A and B are listed in the demo version. When you have registered for the demo version we will send you a mail to direct you to the downloading directory and you will also be given an ID and a password to access the download page on our server. Data Base and Maintenance
The data base consists of 3 *.db files, one for each of the resources above and these files are encrypted. This means that you are NOT permitted to and will not have access to making changes in any of the db's. The db's are Shipanalysis copy-righted property and we will make changes or correct mistakes upon the users good input. We are of course grateful if you would contact us by mail when you discover mistakes or other suggestions of how we could improve the application for the benefit of all users. We will also endeavor to expand all the db's regularly and will make updates available at the site for downloading so please check regularly for the latest db's if you are registered and paying users of the software. Normal db updates are free of charge for 12 months. After this you will be requested to pay a nominal fee for further updates. Major updates of the program will be offered to registered paying users at a discounted price however we will maintain regular support for the "older" versions of the application without additional costs. Should you wish to purchase the db's we will be willing to discuss this but in principal this would only apply for use internally and not for re-distribution. Contact us to discuss this. Please contact us for further questions, suggestions, amendments or corrections ..Shipanalysis. Distance
By default and when activated SUDist opens in the distance table window. The window interface is typically MS-Windows© oriented so that you can size and position it as per preference and it will "stick" so that next time it will open in the last exit position and size. Input of a port is done in the field where the GO button is on the right. Jumping between fields is done by placing the cursor in the field or by using "Tab" on the keyboard. The map is visible by default and if you wish to hide it go to "View" on the menubar and click "Hide Map". If you wish to see the port that you have selected just mark the port(s) in the upper/larger field(s). Both ports do NOT show up at the same time. ALL 6000+ ports of the port database are available in the distance table BUT only the ports marked with a "!" are represented with a value (distance) in the distance database. This means that if you want to read the distance by pressing the "READ" button both ports MUST be marked with a "!". Please note though that there is NO guarantee that, even if both ports are marked, that particular distance is available in the distance database. If the field for distance turns up "empty" try either; 1. to split the distance by using larger well known ports or junctions. Example: Aalborg - Seria, Enter Aalborg - Gibraltar and then "READ", then enter Gibraltar - Singapore and press the button "ADD" and finally enter Singapore - Seria and then press "ADD". You will now see the following in the "DISTANCE" field; 1808k+6975s+669 Now if you want the total number of days for the voyage please press the up/down arrows in the "speed" field and then press "CALCULATE" and you will get the total steaming days for the voyage Aalborg to Seria. 2. or try using a PROXIMITY port. A PROXIMITY port is a port or ports which is located within a 2 degrees (by default) radius from the port that you have selected. If you are an experienced user you can change the default radius in the sudist.ini file. An example: You are looking for Arzew in Algeria. This port is not in the distance db so press proximity ports and you will find Oran!. Just mark Oran! and press OK in the pop-up window and you can continue. The distance Arzew to where-ever will be read as Oran to where-ever and the true distance will only be marginally different. 3. Quick and Dirty solution. Just plot the port on the map by selecting it in the large upper field to see where the port is on the map and estimate a major port nearby which you can use. To get a quick approximate distance this is perfectly OK especially if the distance between the ports that you wish is far.
4.
NEW NEW!!!!
As from September 2001 if the distance you are seeking is turning out empty you will be prompted by the system to calculate
the distance between the ports based on these ports geographical coordinates. This is of course useful when the ports are
separated by open seas but can not be used for ports separated by land as the distance is based on "as the crow flies".
The calculation formula is based on great circle navigation and is therefore highly reliable.

The diatnce calculator can also be activated via the Menu-line -->Distance --> Calculator and you could then input ANY
geographical coordinates and get a distance. This could be very useful if the applicatio is available onboard a ship and you know
where you are and wish to find the distance to a port or any other geographical point.

Same Port - Different names
A substantial amount of ports are known under different names. Gothenburg/Goteborg is one example.
There are a number of ways in which you can find the right one.

- Type only the first few letters of the ports name and you will get a list of ports displayed.
- Go to the PORT database and search. You will find alias names, locations etc. to guide you.
- Scroll the upper/larger window until you find your port.

Distance - values
Some values are shown as for example 8700s. Here's a list of the letters used in this distance
table and the explanation.
s = via Suez Canal
k = via Kiel Canal
p = via Panama Canal
m = via Straits of Magellan
c = Cape of Good Hope
Most other major "junctions" are represented in the database like:

Cap Finisterre
Lands End
Cape Horn
Gibraltar Strait
Cape Leeuwin
NEW JUNCTIONS POINTS! (jp)
Bishop Rock (jp)
Cape of Good Hope
Fastnet Rock (jp)
Grand Banks South (jp)
Ushant (jp)
Panama Canal
Pentland Firth (jp)
Straits of Florida (jp)
Torres Strait (jp)
Honshu (jp)
Selat Wetar (jp)
Sunda Strait (jp)
Lombok Strait (jp)
Wilson Promotory (jp)
Yucatan Channel (jp)
Inishtrahull (jp)
Tsugaru-Kaikyo (jp)
Punta Arenas (Magellan)

which you can use to create distances between ports NOT directly represented in the distance
database.

Last but not least. Experiment and find you own way of achieving what you want fast.
Only your own imagination stops you from finding the optimal individual way of using the
database to your advantage.

SCREEN-SHOT DISTANCE TABLE

NO more searching the whole net in order to find relevant information. Our links takes you directly and without any delay to the information you need. We will regularly validate links and make updates and we also kindly request you to contribute by letting us know if links are not working or you find links to ports which are not represented in our database. Location The parameters on top of the main window are sizeable so just place the cursor on the dividers and "drag" them to resize the field. Under "LOCATION" you will find more information which will assist you in pin-pointing where the port is. Gradually this information will be more comprehensive in future releases.
